Xenoborg has issues with (some) ATI drivers

Hey GE members, long time no see Happy

I'm not officially "back in the scene" yet, I'm still busy with some university/class stuff. The reason why I'm writing this is because I just wanted to let you know I'm still actively working on this project (with not nearly as much time as before though). I was making a small demonstration with a classmate in my C101 class (a class that I'm far too advanced for) about my emulator showing him my current progress on Xenoborg. Everytime I tried to emulate an .xbe program, Xenoborg would crash due to a problem with ATI's OpenGL video card drivers. I don't know if this is video card/driver specific, but Xenoborg doesn't seem to like ATI cards much Sad NVIDIA cards run Xenoborg fine. Another reason why I'm telling you all this is because I plan to make a release sometime this comming fall. It will be running some homebrew games soon (non-Big Grink) and I know you all are getting tired of waiting. So until then, gotta go. Any feedback is welcome.

BTW, Xenoborg especially hates the ATI Radeon X300 series and/or it's drivers. So hopefully, I can fix this problem so that ATI users can use this emulator too.

It's weird though, isn't it? So ATI cards handle the OGL code differently?

Does this problem occur even when using the Omega Drivers or DNA Drivers too ?
It probably isnt Catalyst-specific, but GLextension-related.

Mire, last I checked, GL extensions seemed either handled differently, or with each vendor having its own batch of proprietary extensions. Xbox uses an Nvidia GPU, but I dont really think that shouldve brought an issue with ATI GL extensions though.

Well, I'm not an ATI user/expert, and I didn't know that there were different types of ATI drivers besides catalyst. Xenoborg currently isn't using any OpenGL extensions right now. They will be added as needed (many of them will be required from OpenGL versions up to 2.0). When I'm ready, I'll find some willing ATI users to test it some more.

ATI dropped support for its earlier GPUs in the 6.6 drivers and later (same with the Omega and DNA drivers corresponding to that catalyst release).

Were the drivers that triggered the issue actually 6.6/or later, or 6.5 and earlier ?

Alright, the driver details are as follows. NOTE: All of our computers at our university use the same specs as well as video cards afaik.

Driver Provider: ATI Technologies INC.
Driver Date: 5/25/2004
Driver Version: 6.14.10.6444

These drivers are old. I wish we could have more up-to-date drivers and we don't have the privileges to do so (as students). So that means no on-campus demonstrations for me unless I port back to Direct3D. Anyway this just FYI.

Are campus presentations required for school? A borrowed recent laptop, maybe with a projector probably could do the trick fine enough

No, it was just a personal demonstration to a friend. When I was debugging I found out what component of the ATI drivers were crashing (inside atioglxx.dll). I'm sure an updated driver would solve this.

Xenoborg is starting to have more compatibility issues. My latest SVN build crashes on drkIIRaziel's (author or NullDC) PC, but this was caused by a memcpy though, but we're resolving those issues. He's also writing me some dynarec code for x86-64 builds (sorry, 32-bit users will miss out on it), which was very generous of him.

Not quite, drkIIRaziel and Exophase have volunteered to help me with the x86 related stuff (it's a lot harder then it sounds).

possible feedback?

well blueshogun is a great person and dev, hardcorerikki you know, i change my mind about emulation, because emulator like pcsx2 are best rigth now, in the past i only want p[/align]lay god of war and now is some playable and ghost rider too, gabest makes all and now know the real way, maybe if all developers works together, the emulators could be better and more fasters, i wish that pcsx2 team make a feedback with cxbx and blueshogun for makes a best xbox emulator with pacthes and all graphics and sound implements like pcsx2 has, i love xbox games like dead or live volleyball and ninja gaiden, mercnaries, etc...thanks
