RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

I have a deep and abnormally intense hatred of Vista, so SP3 for XP is what I'm looking forward to. Smile

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

XP SP3 got my vote, the only way I would look forward to a Vista upgrade is if they stripped it back and it performed as well as XP,

You can install Vista on my computer... when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. :-)

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

XP SP3 hands down. I'd take Windows ME before I take Vista. My cousin's PC has Vista and neither one of us can stand it. Annoying as hell, dBig Griniag sucks, and fixes for stuff that isn't even broken.

XP SP3 since I hear it has better performance over previous service packs.

I also wouldn't mind Vista SP1, but since I have one choice XP SP3 it is.Smile

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

Amusingly, I'm looking forward to neither of them. Having some of the most hostile of Vista's "features" rolled back into XP doesn't look any pleasing to me, and the promise of +10% performance increase isn't an attractive enough incentive, and I doubt even money gushed into my pockets would make me go SP3 anytime if ever, for any rig connected to any kind of network. Even SP2 really was pushing it pretty far.
SP2 is my very final milestone with MS and closed source OSes as fullfledged desktop OSes.

"...and fixes for stuff that isn't even broken..."
lol. MS's way of forcing updates upon everyone, just like with the deliberate crafting of issues into 95, 98 and ME. Lately, it seems it's "security" that is the biggest "seller" by a considerable margin (probably since people get this fuzzy feeling someone cares about their safety on the net, and they should trust them unconditionally), no matter how much each of these "security" updates screw everyone.

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

I don't think anything can help Vista at this point. It's an entire OS that consists of bloatware.Toungue

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

I dont know whats so bad about Vista. been using it for like a few months now. and it doesnt look so bad. Turn off the annoying "User Account Control" and its pretty cool. I can use all the softwares, games, etc on Vista.

but, I'm not going to go for XPSP3 or even Vista SP1 unless its a significant update.

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

Sure you can use your games, but they run slower, from benches I have seen, Crisis runs up to 25% slower in Vista (one the same settings). Pretty stupid.

Do you consider OS X to be (fully) closed-source? It's a great Unix-based OS that I'd be using now if I wasn't stuck with Windows for CAD work.

Yes. Locking out everything, relying on heavywheight crypto and TPM operations doesn't look the least open. Personally, I'd say It's not compared to TiVO because most of the opensource parts are either replaceable or not forcefully integrated, never mind most of them have publically 'displayed' source code. Lets not bring Apple into thread, Linux sure looks worthier as a third poll entry than MacOS (still a solution for pretty much only work, like design and printing)

RE: XP SP3 x Vista SP1

Whilst Vista is bloated, you can remove most of it with vLite. Yeah, XP is a much lighter OS, but I don't understand why some people hate Vista so much, it's interface works just as fast as XP to the eye, and I can't say I've had any problems with it apart from a few random glitches, which SP1 will hopefully fix.

I'd say I'm more looking forward to SP1 for Vista because I expect XP SP3 will introduce mandatory WGA, along with IE7 and WMP11.
* moogleboi says no thanks to XP SP3.

And please don't flame me for my views.
