Windows 7
I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 7 turns out to be a partly rewritten version of Vista, with a few new features, a slightly different look and a faster boot time... 'cus atm, it looks like it'll be just that. Rumored features include implementation of tabbed explorer, new desktop effects, multiple desktops, integration with live services and microsoft products.
Once betas leak, we'll know if XP was the last decent version of Windows...

RE: Windows 7
And when we come around the time of it's release everyone will be whining about how it's a system hog compared to how fast and lean Windows Vista is and asking why would anyone buy it when Windows Vista is still available on the market for much cheaper as well as complaining about how much of a pointless waste of system resources the eye candy is when Vista doesn't need a "high end gaming PC" to run.

RE: Windows 7
Actually, to be honest, since Windows 2000, Microsoft has just added more crap over the years, adding links in explorer to "Buy this CD online", or another example, Vista's "Welcome Center" or "anytime upgrade", which is basically just advertisement.
All this integration with other Microsoft "services" makes Windows look tacky. Along with unnecessary applications and features such as sync center or "Windows DVD Maker" (okay, I certainly don't use them) ... the Windows installation process really should ask what the user wants to be installed, like it did back in Windows 98. It also needs to lose some junk, lots of services come started by default that the average user wouldn't even use...
However, I'm all for desktop effects and nifty/convenient interface changes.

RE: Windows 7
Yeah.. they should bring back custom install.. because vLite and nLite can waste CDs/DVDs and require you to fiddle beforehand.
Also, is it just me, or is there something really annoying about the behavior of internet explorer 7? It's also lacking features such as session handling, proper support for plugins and the tab bar is really chunky.. it should hide itself when not in use.
It's strange that while Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world, they do little to satisfy their customers feedback in time...

RE: Windows 7
By the way, Windows 7 Milestone 1 has been released, but screenshots of it have yet to leak. Apparently it's exactly like Vista, just with a few UI changes.

RE: Windows 7
No point installing Alpha builds at this point (It hasn't leaked either). As I said, not much has changed since Vista.
I wouldn't bother fussing until 7 reaches beta next year, that'll give some indication of what the finished product will be like.

RE: Windows 7
vista is already a total trainwreck. it's winme 2007.
xp (and its shift to nt architecture) provided a vast improvement in performance from winme. unfortunately, i see no indication that microsoft is going to learn from any of its mistakes this time around -- and it seems reluctant to shift to a fundamentally different codebase for windows 7. it's just feature, feature, feature -- no substance, just bloat.

RE: Windows 7
I can see Windows 7 being to Vista like what XP was to 2000, basically them learning about the mistakes of Vista, fixing them and implementing new ones sort of like how people were complaining about the same thing with XP compared to 98 when it was first released.
