Surface
Microsoft Surface is a forthcoming product from Microsoft which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects. It was announced on May 30, 2007 and is expected to be released by commercial partners in November 2007. Initial customers will be in the hospitality businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, retail, and public entertainment venues.

Surface is essentially a Windows Vista PC tucked inside a black table base, topped with a 30-inch touchscreen in a clear acrylic frame. Five cameras that can sense nearby objects are mounted beneath the screen. Users can interact with the machine by touching or dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushes across the screen, or by setting real-world items tagged with special bar-code labels on top of it.

Touchscreen technology is not new but bringing it to home is (despite the wallet rape, of course). I wonder how much it'll affect the actual scene. I mean, we are used to mouses and keyboards, now controlling everything with fingers... it's a thing to be thinked about.

RE: Surface
I watched this on a morning breakfast tv show, it reminds me of the Wii and DS put together. I dont think it will take off and it certanly never replace desktop computers, perhaps places like casinos would like them or at the most people who work in multimedia. Im not to excited.

This really reminds me of the ReacTable. I saw it live when I saw Bjork, it's really awesome.

RE: Surface
Like emwearz I dont see it replacing the pc altogether, maybe replacing the way we interact with them instead, possibly replacing the mouse, keyboard and montior, so you still have you pc doing all the hard work, but having this surfcae thing acting as the UI.
