The Darkness is the first game based on the comic series created in 1996 by David Wohl, Marc Silvestri and Garth Ennis and produced by Top Cow Productions. It is the first game about Jackie Estacado and the power of the Darkness and follows its comic origin quite loosely (so, don't expect meeting Angelus or Witchblade here). For more information check out the Wikipedia page.
The game tells you the story of a mafia hitman named Jackie Estacado whom his uncle and mafia Don, Paulie Franchetti decides to get rid of, right on the day of Jackie's 21st birthday. So happens that the very same day Jackie inherits the mysterious power of the Darkness and so begins his revenge...
System tested on: Sony Playstation 3 PAL FW 1.90, HDMI output 720p, 2.1 sound system
Graphic: 8/10
The graphics are very good, but unfortunately PS3 version suffers from aliasing which is higher than on Xbox 360. Jackie visits various locations in New York City which look good, we can see some nice textures and lights. The Darkness heads that can be seen on screen are made very good, they look as if they are almost alive
When using the power called Creeping Dark (when you can move one of the heads and stealth kill your opponents) the screen is covered with cool filter effect which I personally like very much. The characters models are made quite well, not all of them though (some faces look like zombies and I don't mean the models that can be found in Hell) and could use some more work here. Jackie's hair behaves a little weird sometimes, too - as if it was a veil, not hair. Also I've encountered several glitches and things that shouldn't be happening (for example, when Jackie uses a phone the characters around him tend to freeze sometimes and continue moving when he hangs up; there was also a glitch when a subway revolving gate went through NPC's body. That kind of things shouldn't happen on 7th gen console, especially when PS3 version was delayed!). But as I said before, the graphics are very good overall and climatic. If you like dark rooms and locations, you'll be in heaven
There are also some full-length movies that you may watch on tvs scattered around.
Sound: 9/10
Sound comes along with the graphic, and everything is nice here. The music (steady when you don't fight and heavy when you do) adds the climate and makes you either feeling cosy and relaxed when walking the subway stations or wanting to kill all the bad guys when fighting them
Character voices are acted very good and everything blends very nice altogether.
Gameplay: 8/10
The Darkness plays nice and smooth, it has a good storyline which will absorb you very much. If you had played The Chronicles of Riddick on Xbox (which is being remade for PS3 as rumor says) you'd feel at home, although The Darkness is a little different. Most of the game you will spend creeping in the dark and destroying light sources (which The Darkness can't stand) as well as shooting enemies. The game is divided into five chapters, each one has some sidequests for you as well. There also are some strong scenes which I won't tell you about here not to spoil your fun (Chapter 1 and 3 endings for example). While playing you can unlock various extra content, which then can be viewed in main menu, by gathering collectables (which are phone numbers and letters) and then using them on phones or mailboxes. Some answering machines are really fun to hear
During loading a new area you get to watch Jackie talking about the plot and some random stuff. The latter can be a little repetitive, I got the one about the back riding cab and Crazy Abdul three times in a row...
In other words, the game is definately worth buying, so don't just sit here, if you have a PS3 or Xbox360 go to the store and do it!
