I was going to put one in until I found a method that was very tedious and hard (soldering 40 wires to PS2 mainboard , or buy a 70+ USD adapter kit) and I didn't know if it would be stable...
Also you gotta consider the use of a harddrive in a PS2. I never quite understood why people want this, because to play backups or homebrews burning DVD's is way cheaper.
Swap Magic costs about 12€ on ebay, a 25-DVD+R-Pack is about 12€, a 10-DVD-DL about 20€. I only encountered one game so far that didn't work with it(Devil May Cry2).
I think that exploit by itself was destroyed in the slim PS2s..
But , I've heard of some software named USB-advanced/extreme but I heard that in offers inferior speed compared to the DVD drive...

Dubleo is correct. One of the primary reasons for the advent of the slim PS2 was reportedly to remove the HDD exploit. I'm not sure if there are methods to circumvent it, but honestly, you'd be better off buying a fatty after the PS3 launch. I'm sure there will be _massive_ price drops in the secondhand market. (BTW, I've heard that Swap Magic 3 works on the slims but there's no HDD exploit AFAIK.) Good luck!

Yep I had I slim and works with it, BUT it's really really annoing, since you have to keep your disk-drive open the whole time while you play and often games only work half, like grandia extreme, witch only works black and white.

use RGB cable for color.
usb hdd works slower than internal hdd.
some games needs patches to work correctly with hdd.
ide cable for ps two hdd needs to be short and wires should be even for non problem usage (the best way is to use 80 wire cable - "ata 100 cable", because its shielded)
first picture shows cheap solution "do it yourself" hdd connector, second method is easier, but it is more expensive.
ps.hdd connector does not cost over 70$ its about 25$ http://www.mod-chip.com/en/hd_connect.php#price

My friend's slim ps2 died after 6 months! The laser in the ps2 was already broken, refusing to read ps2 disks. So using a harddrive to save the laser sounds like a good idea cos i'm hoping to use mine at least until next year (bying a ps3 then).

reduce load time, memory card data, FFXI requires patches, improve replays in NBA 2K5 and NFL 2K5..
