I once had a mint copy of Final Fantasy VIII get chewed by an Aopen drive...
And consider yourself lucky.
Once, I suddenly had a low-grade cd bI0wn into pieces inside a cd writer, with shards getting out the blasted faceplate. Blame it on 72x (highly unrecommended, hell even 52x isnt)

Ouch, a CD is just a small layer of metal and a piece of plastic, didn't think it would cut through a PC case...

PCs hate me. Stuff always seems to go wrong with them when I'm around. It currently stands at:
2 CD drives, 1 motherboard, 1 PSU and a lot of corrupt Windows installations (due to fiddling/malware)
Though it doesn't happen so much nowadays, many of it's to blame from when I was a curious kid =p
If something goes wrong, I normally just send the part in for an RMA.

This lite-on that I have had since my AMD-XP is starting to die, rattling really loudly and sometimes not recognizing discs until I take them out and put them in a few times.

Another thing I hate about DVD writers is when you get a spec of dust on the disc and it fucks up the burn. I've already had files get totally screwed before now because of it.
DVDs also used to take ages to burn on my last PC.
Btw, I have a batch on sony DVD-Rs, and each one I hold under a lamp, has a tiny lightspot in the *same* place after it has been burnt. Is it a fault batch?

Just the Ricoh one in my parents' PC. It refuses to read the discs it wrote itself.
Also, the Philips DVD recorder we have hooked up to the TV makes noise like hell. It's like the start of a motor Grand Prix, constantly revving up and all.
And my NEC dvd writer shattered a Baldur's Gate 2 disc within a week I owned it. But that was my own fault, the disc had a crack in it.

I cant even remember the name of my drive, but it sucks sooo much ass. it used to be fine, read everything really well, but gradually stopped reading DVD's, completely, Im lucky I've got all my games saved on my HDD as ISO's For now it reads CD's...ish. It's pissed me off quite alot, but not to the point I rip it out and melt it...yet.

RE: Ever had a DVD/CD drive REALLY piss you off?
If I may give an advice
Don't ever use optical drives, avoid them at all costs. They constantly screw
up one way or the other, speed is awfull and when reinstalling windows my usually
unhearable computer sounds like its starting off into orbit
I bet a whole fresh windows install would take not more than 10 minutes if done
from an image..
