RE: Disc Drive (D:) Sudden disappearance...!!!!
This is a different computer, I've gotten it working okay on my laptop save for some shuddery transitions on FF7..
Now this desktop PC I seem to have lost my CD/DVD drive..

Does the BIOS show the drive on startup?

I don't think so
I got IDE Master, and IDE Slave. two of them set to NONE.
Tried setting them to auto, and mode 0-1, but no good.

Go into control panels, System, Hardware, Device Manager, open the DVD/CD-ROM Drive tree and check its there (also make sure its not disabled in there for whatever reason).

Have you tried unplugging the drive and plugging it back again? Or plugging it to a different connector? How is it connected, along with HDD or separately? If your BIOS doesn't show them, neither will Windows.

The other thing to do is check your connections. Make sure that the IDE cable is free of any cuts or creases that may cause a short. If your BIOS doesn't see it, Windows is never going to. Check your jumpers and make sure they're set accordingly. Some boards have issues with manual settings (such as primary and secondary settings) and will only allow for the cable select option, while other boards are the exact opposite, and will not work under cable select settings and must be set manually. If all else fails, a BIOS update may be in order. The only other possibility would be that there is something wrong with the IDE controller, which you can test by connecting another known working drive into the line. If the BIOS fails to detect that as well, you most likely have a failed controller.

well it's in my device manager.
It ejects and pushes back in electronically..
It appeared in My Computer briefly, but is gone again now.

My advice: Try to boot a Linux LiveCD/DVD like Ubuntu or Knoppix to make sure your drive isn't on the fritz (in terms of hardware). If everything checks out, just reinstall Windows. It's not a huge deal and you'll have a nice clean slate to work with.

NOT recommended. Try this instead, its usually the IDE drivers who are to blame.
1 - Go to System Properties (Rightclick on MY COMPUTER)
2 - Go to Hardware
3 - Go to Device Manager
4 - Go to IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers. Uninstall the IDE channel associated with your DVD drive (or even both if youre unsure). At this stage you can either reboot (and IDE drivers and drives will be back), or in the same screen (either now or after a reboot, if it wasnt fixed for some reason, use the "Action" "Scan for hardware changes".
I hope this helps. Usually, such a procedure reveals itself necessary with some nasty protections for PC games, like StarForce.

HCR stole my next reply, also.

This just means its getting power, you could unplug the ide cable and it would still open when you push the button.[/quote]
